What is a customs quota and how can you reduce your import costs with it?

tariff quota

If you are importing goods from outside the European Union, you will certainly know that the amount of customs duty has a huge impact on the final cost of the transaction.
One way to reduce it is to tariff quota - i.e. the amount of goods defined by the European Union that can be imported under preferential conditions, without having to pay the full rate of duty.

How does the customs quota work?

Every quarter the European Commission shall make available a specific the number of kilograms or tonnes of the commodity concerned, which can be placed on the market with reduced duty or total exemption.
In order to make use of this option, the following must be submitted during customs clearance application for a tariff quota.
If granted - the importer does not pay the 25% safeguard duty, which also translates into lower VAT.

How does Alfa Customs Agency assist in obtaining a customs quota?

At Alfa Customs Agency we regularly carry out clearance with customs quota requests, especially in the first days of the new quarter, when the a pool of goods is still available.
Thanks to our agents' experience and up-to-date knowledge of EU procedures, we help clients apply correctly and on time, which is often decisive in obtaining preferences.

🎥 In a short video our expert, Marcin Szreder, he explains:

  • When it is worth applying for a customs quota,
  • which goods are most often subject to quotas,
  • and how you can save on customs duties and VAT.

Why act in advance?

The customs quota pool is limited and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
This is why most applications are submitted in the first days of the quarter concerned - this is when importers have the best chance of obtaining a duty exemption.
