Tariff code - why is it key when importing into the EU?
Importing goods into the European Union?
One of the most important elements of the briefing is correct determination of the tariff code.
It is the tariff code (CN code) that determines:
- amount of duty,
- the way VAT is calculated,
- any restrictions, permits or additional requirements.
A misclassification can lead to adjustments, surcharges, inspections and even detention of goods. Therefore, the tariff code is not a formality - it is the foundation of safe importation.
What is a customs tariff code (CN code)?
A tariff code is the classification number assigned to a particular good in the Combined Nomenclature (CN).
Any goods entering the EU customs territory must be classified according to its:
- destiny,
- composition,
- function,
- technical parameters.
It is on the basis of this code that the customs authorities determine the rate of duty and the method of taxation.

Why is the correct classification of goods so important?
A correctly established tariff code allows:
âś” avoid under- or overcharging of customs duties
âś” reduce the risk of customs corrections and controls
âś” prevent delays in check-in
âś” ensure compliance with customs legislation
In turn, misclassification can result:
- surcharge of customs duty and VAT plus interest,
- administrative sanctions,
- problems in subsequent imports.
Therefore, the determination of the code should be based on the real parameters of the goods and not solely on the trade name.
What influences the determination of the tariff code?
The classification of goods is not always obvious. In practice, the relevance includes:
- detailed technical specifications,
- material composition,
- product feature,
- mode of action,
- the completeness of the product.
In many cases, differences between similar products can result in a completely different duty rate being applied.
BTI - Binding Tariff Information as a security
If the importer wants to be fully certain of the correctness of the classification, he can request a Binding Tariff Information (BTI).
A BTI is an official administrative decision issued by the customs authorities which:
- confirms the correct tariff code,
- is binding throughout the EU,
- protects the trader against a challenge to the classification during its period of validity.
This solution is particularly recommended for:
- high value goods,
- constant imports,
- more complex technical products.

Tariff code and security of your imports
The correct classification of goods is not only a formal issue.
This is an element that directly affects:
- the amount of import costs,
- liquidity of supply,
- the operational stability of the company,
- fiscal security.
If you are planning to import into the European Union or want to verify the applicable tariff code - it is worth doing this before clearance, rather than after a possible inspection.
