Customs transit - the safe carriage of goods without immediate payment
If you are importing or exporting goods, you have certainly heard of transit customs clearance. This is one of the most frequently asked questions we are asked at Alfa Customs Agency:
What exactly is transit? Do I have to pay customs duties and VAT when the goods are only transited through other countries?
Today, as part of the „Target tips”, our expert Marcin Szreder will talk about it
What does customs clearance for transit consist of?
Transit clearance is a procedure that allows the payment of customs duties and VAT to be suspended for the duration of the transit of goods from point A to point B in countries covered by the transit convention (e.g. within the European Union).
Instead of paying customs duties straight away, a transit declaration is lodged with the customs office and the office authorises the passage of the goods. This allows the goods to travel onwards - and settlement only takes place at the destination.
When is transit used?
The transit procedure is needed wherever:
the goods have not yet been cleared for circulation and must pass through several countries,
the point of check-in and the point of destination are at different locations, e.g. in another EU country,
transport is carried out under cover of a transit document protected by customs.
What is needed to start transit?
To trigger the transit procedure, you need:
Submit the transit declaration to the customs office.
Have customs guarantee - is a safeguard that protects the tax and customs office in case the goods do not reach their destination.
Wait for the application to be accepted and for the MRN to be assigned to allow carriage.
At Alfa Customs Agency, we have security of up to PLN 10,000,000 - so we can carry out transit even for large and demanding cargoes.
How does transit end?
On arrival at the destination, the transit is closed at the customs office and the goods move on to a further procedure - most often they are then cleared for circulation or placed under a subsequent customs procedure.
Why entrust transit to specialists?
At first glance, everything looks simple - one notification and the carriage is ready. In practice:
An experienced customs agency takes over all these responsibilities and makes sure that your goods arrive on time and the procedure is closed properly.
